Last week US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Welch visited Beirut but departed having achieved no breakthrough in the political deadlock. Huh? I don't remember any Syrians visiting Lebanon to discuss the political crisis and yet they are accused of interfering. And here we have a blatant visit by a US official with the purpose of meddling in Lebanese politics. Why aren't we in uproar? Why do we allow the US to play a significant role in where our country is heading? Why isn't it enough to glance at Iraq or Afghanistan to know the kind of influence America can bring to a country's future? Why not think back to two years ago when America was very happy to sit back and watch our civilians being massacred on our own territory?
Dialogue is the only path to reconciliation and a political solution. Those that refuse dialogue clearly do not have the nation's interests at heart. Is it any wonder that March 14 supporters and the US oppose dialogue at this stage?
